History: London
Caffe-Mobile was set up in North London by Guy
Llewellyn
in 1995, after visits
to Italy an idea came to him to convert the quirky “ape“
van into a mobile cafe
serving coffee to people on the go.
The tiny van allowed him access to areas previously un-catered
for as well as
opening up the market to new entrepreneurs wanting to offer something
a little
different.
Guy employed traditional Italian lever coffee machines,
bringing the art of
coffee making back to its traditional roots.
The first van was introduced on Islington High St next to the
Angel Tube
Station creating a profitable relationship that would be repeated.
The eye catching van together with
an excellent machine and the award winning
blend form the Algerian Coffee Company-allowing instant success
to the
Caffe-Mobile concept.
With 8 vans around London and many
more nationwide under the management of
others sharing in the vision, Caffe-Mobile has become a recognised
brand name
renowned for quality, competitive pricing and a speedy and friendly
service. |
History: Cambridge
Ben Jones runs the Caffe-Mobile in Cambridge:
"I started working in coffee bars in Cambridge on my gap year in 1999.
This period saw me putting in the hours at Grinders, Starbucks, Costa coffee and other local cafes.
It was while I was at grinders (www.grinders-coffee.co.uk)
that I really learnt my stuff. A programme consisting of espresso machine training, bean understanding and drink preparation ensured that I had
full knowledge of what it took to work as a professional barista. In the summer of 2000 on a trip to Spitalfields Market in London with my father
we spotted a "caffe mobile" parked up and they were doing a roaring trade.
I investigated further and discovered there was an opportunity for a pitch within the All Saints Garden Craft Market
in Cambridge. Now with pitches on Cambridge general market 6 days a week and the existing craft market pitch, caffe mobile is a prominent feature
in Cambridge coffee culture."
